A Traditional Budo Dojo

Shindokan Budo New England had moved! We are located in the Velvet Mill at 22 Bayview Avenue, Studio 65, in historic Stonington, Connecticut!

Shindokan Budo New England is a traditional dojo located on the southern New England shoreline, serving eastern Connecticut, southern Rhode Island, and beyond. A shibu dojo of the Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai (KNBK), we are dedicated to the deep study and correct propagation of the classical and traditional martial arts of Japan in our area. Much of what we have to offer can be found nowhere else in this region, making our dojo unique among all others here in New England.  

We study and teach truly authentic budo traditions, with verifiable, documented lineages extending back to the samurai, the warrior class of feudal Japan. Each ryu-ha (school) has been handed down through direct transmission, from warrior to warrior, teacher to student, heart  to heart. We have ongoing classes in the koryu (literally, "old-flow"; the classical martial traditions of the samurai) arts of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Iai-Heiho (Iaijutsu/Iaido) and Shindo Muso-ryu Jojutsu, as well as Nihon Aiki Jujutsu, a gendai budo derived directly from the classical fighting arts of the samurai.

While we are a public dojo, we understand the martial traditions that we practice to be invaluable cultural treasures that are pathways to unlocking our highest life potential. As such, in keeping with tradition, admission to our dojo requires an interview with the Chief Instructor and a probationary period to ensure a proper fit for both potential student and the dojo.

Committed practice in a traditional dojo is potentially a life changing process, a process  that is realized in concrete changes in one's life perspective and an ability to have a deep and positive effect on others as well on one's environment. Having been entrusted with the task of proper service as caretakers of our various arts, we offer access to pathways for cultivation of the way of the true warrior heart: a victorious life of fearlessness, respect, dignity and compassion. These are attributes that can provide one with the personal power to face these most challenging of times with courage and the resolute will to overcome all obstacles that one may face.  Our practice is demanding and exacting; students will be required to practice with great determination to progress to the higher levels in these arts.
