Who We Are

A Brief Introduction

Welcome to our website! It is currently under construction, so we do not yet have all the information up that we intend to include. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you might have.

Shindokan Dojo is a traditional budo dojo located on the southeastern New England shoreline, serving eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and beyond. We are dedicated to the embodiment of the values and virtues of authentic Japanese budo and its dissemination throughout the greater New England region. The budo traditions housed in our dojo are authentic, with verifiable, documented lineages extending back to the samurai class of feudal Japan, handed down through direct transmission from teacher to student, from heart to heart.

Our Mission

While the general view is that the purpose of martial arts is for the cultivation of life-protection (self-defence) skills, the practise of budo goes far beyond physical abilities. True budo is a forge that dispels the mists of delusion that prevent us from seeing the true nature of reality with clarity, clearing our vision to see the world through the bright vividness of awakening. As the sword that gives life, the deeper purpose of budo is to cut through that delusion and awaken to a life based on gratitude, dignity, and compassion and to do our utmost to make a difference for the benefit of all beings in this one great life. Our mission here at Shindokan Dojo is to help others to awaken to and embody these ideals in their lives.

Our Teachers

Our instructors are highly trained and experienced practitioners who are passionate about training and sharing the arts that we practice at Shindokan Dojo. They provide personalized attention and guidance to each student, helping them to improve their technique and reach their full potential. Our instructors are committed to creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all of our students.

A Little About Us

Our Practices

Here at Shindokan Dojo, we offer training in both koryu Japanese sword arts and modern forms of unarmed budo. Specifically, we offer training in the classical martial traditions of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Iai-Heiho (Iaijutsu) and Shinto-ryu Kenjutsu, as well as Shindokan Aiki Budo (Aiki Jujutsu and Jujutsu-Kempo)  and Aikido, modern budo traditions rooted in the older classical fighting arts of Japan.

While we are a public dojo, we understand the martial traditions that we practice to be invaluable treasures that are pathways to unlocking our highest life potential. As such, in keeping with tradition, admission to our dojo requires an interview with the Chief Instructor and a probationary period to ensure a proper fit for both potential student and the dojo. We welcome all inquires and look forward to walking this path with you.
